At Hawthorne Primary School our curriculum has been organised over a two year rolling programme, Cycle A and Cycle B. We are currently redesigning our curriculum so only cycle A is available to view. We are following Cycle A in the 2018-2019 academic year. Throughout the curriculum, every opportunity is taken to prepare our pupils for Life in Modern Britain. Every child has an equal opportunity to experience all aspects of the curriculum and to develop his / her own full potential.
Learners in the Foundation Stage follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. The National Curriculum is followed from Year 1 to Year 6. Whilst ensuring all aspects of the curriculum are covered, a thematic approach is in place. This allows pupils and staff to choose topics that they would like to study where they can. The curriculum is enriched through a wide range of visits and activities both in and out of school. Phonics is taught following the DfES Letters and Sounds principles. There is no specific reading scheme used across school, but colour coded book banding levels are in place.
The school has a structured but flexible programme of activities carefully chosen to develop all basic skills and to encourage exploration, investigation, observation, communication and problem solving.
