Assessment

 

Assessment is the process by which we know how well pupils are doing.  

There are statutory assessments that all schools are required to undertake at certain times throughout a child’s school life.  There are regular non-statutory assessments carried out in every year group to monitor pupils’ progress.  Assessment for Learning (AfL) is embedded throughout the curriculum. This is assessing pupils throughout lessons so that they are aware of what they have learned and what the next steps in learning are; it also informs teachers’ planning.  

Your child's progress and attainment will be reported to you at parents' evenings and in more informal conversations with you throughout the year.  Following the move towards Assessment Without Levels, you will be informed whether your child is working at, above or below age related expectations.  Curriculum meetings are held at the start of each academic year to explain these expectations. 

 

Statutory Assessments 

At the end of each key stage in education there are statutory assessments, the results of which have to be reported to the Local Authority and the Department for Education.

Non-statutory assessments

When pupils enter Hawthorne Primary School baseline data is collected to show where children are working within the EYFS framework.  EYFS staff regularly assess children and update their learning journeys which highlights successes and areas to focus on. This assessment process continues throughout the EYFS.

From Year 1, when pupils are working within the National Curriculum, they will be assessed each term in reading, writing and maths.  This assessment is recorded and allows school to track individual and groups’ progress and attainment.

If a pupil is working significantly below age related expectations of the national curriculum, they may be assessed using a document called B Squared. These are small steps objectives that are used for assessing progress of pupils with Special Educational Needs. At the end of Key Stage 1 and 2, if a child is working significantly below the expected standard, they will be assessed on the 'Pre Key Stage Standards'. These will be reported to parents in the end of year report.
