Music at Hawthorne
Our curriculum principles are evident in our music curriculum.
R -Rich Vocabulary
E – Experiential
A – Aspiration
L – Life Skills
Rich Vocabulary
The Charanga Music Scheme, introduces a lot of subject specific vocabulary to the children. By using the vocabulary, children are able to construct and deepen their understanding. Teaching the vocabulary explicitly enables the children to make connections in Music. This vocabulary is used within Music lessons. As children may not be exposed to this vocabulary in their normal day-to-day lives, we are enhancing the cultural capital of our children.
Experiential
Within our Music lesson, all children from Nursery to Year 6 will engage with Music in our wonderful new Music room. This is filled with a wide variety of instruments from different countries. We also have a Ukelele wall and a History of Music wall which focusses on different Musicians over many generations. The structure of the lesson sequences give the children the experience to learn with a range of Musical resources.
Aspiration
The Charanga Music Scheme encourages high aspirations by not capping their learning of Music. It focusses solely on their ability. We expect the children to challenge themselves and hold high aspirations for any work they complete.
Life Skills
Through the well-planned Long-Term Plan and Subject Maps, children are provided with the Music skills needed to progress if they wish to take their Music learning further.

Music Opportunities
At Hawthorne, we offer additional Music Opportunities.
We offer Rock Steady Music to all children. Rock Steady Music is an outside provider who comes into school to make learning an instrument fun. It is proven to progress musicianship, confidence and team work. The children can choose to play the electric guitar, keyboard, drums or vocals and they do this within a supportive environment. The Band Leaders are fantastic with the children and really encouraging. All of the bands come together in our school Rock Steady Concert. Parents are invited to watch their children perform and classes are invited to support their peers.
We also offer a KS2 Choir. This is led by Miss Parr and Mrs Harris. This is an opportunity for all singing lovers to come together and perform. It is a great way to make new friends! It is also a great opportunity to develop singing skills and performance skills. Hawthorne have been invited to open the Christmas Fair in the village and sing at the Bestwood Village Light Switch-on. Over the years, we have had many visitors from local nursing homes and have visited local nursing homes to sing for the elderly. We have attended nationwide events such as Young Voices and Voice in a Million. We have also sang at Nottingham Motorpoint Arena at the Flying High Trust Awards. These have been fantastic opportunities for the children.
Miss Parr leads a KS2 singing assembly on a Wednesday afternoon. All KS2 children attend. This is where we join together and sing harmoniously. It is a great way to build confidence and develop musical knowledge with the different types of songs chosen.
