Rich Vocabulary
Through exposure to age related subject specific vocabulary and explicit teaching of terminology, our children build and develop their technical vocabulary linked to the specific sport/ activity they are currently learning. Children will also develop their oracy skills through PE lessons through the discussion of tactics and viewpoints to develop their communication, leadership and vocabulary skills.
Experiential
Our children will be provided with ‘real’, memorable experiences, through purposeful learning. They will be provided with the opportunity to take part in a wide range of sporting activities. We aim to further develop their cultural capital, by using a range of equipment that they may not have access to at home to ensure skills progression such as gymnastic climbing frames. Children are also invited to take part in a variety of competitions throughout the year to develop their skills in a competitive environment and take part in events run by local partners such as ‘Show racism the red card’ and mental health events where children can learn about wider issues around sport. All children also take part in our annual sports week which includes our sports day competition and a range of Paralympic and Olympic taster sessions such as wheelchair basketball. A range of after school clubs are also run by staff each term to give children the opportunity to further develop their interests and try new activities.
Aspiration
Our children will hold high aspirations for themselves, and the local community. They will understand the importance of not giving up and demonstrate resilience when faced with difficulties; knowing the importance of striving for our goals. We are passionate in developing interests and a strong sense of enthusiasm for sport amongst the children, where we encourage individual talents and skills. Our role is to nurture these interests, expose them to new venues through competitions and events and provide the guidance which will enable the children to develop their aspirations, both in and out of school. Year 6 children are also given the opportunity to become sports ambassadors running sports clubs at lunch times allowing them to develop their leadership skills.
Life Skills
By providing a high quality and progressive curriculum, our pupils will develop a life-long positive relationship with health physical activity. The children will be equipped with the knowledge and skills they need in order to be able to lead healthy and active lives in the future. By nurturing a love of sport and exposing children to a range of games and developing these skills we are creating athletes and sports people of the future and giving children the desire to pursue these sports beyond their time at Hawthorne. Children also undertake units on healthy lifestyles teaching them all about the effects of exercise and healthy eating on the body.
