Literacy
Autumn Term
Here We Are
For our first piece of writing this year we created a list of things we could see on Planet Earth focusing on what initial sounds we could hear. Our list was inspired by the text 'Dear Earth.' We went up to the highest point of our school and looked out at what we could see and then we explored some of these things in further detail using our senses to come up with some exciting adjectives.
During our skills lessons we practiced identifying initial sounds and used this new knowledge within our lists.

The Naughty Bus
For our second piece of writing we were inspired by the fiction text 'Naughty Bus.' We made predictions on why we thought the bus might be naughty before reading, we were then visited by the naughty bus himself and lots of his friends who we used to practice all of our new preposition vocabulary. We then positioned the naughty bus in different places around school and finished a sentence to describe where he was. We then put all these together to publish our own whole class story!

Stick Man
For our next piece of writing we discovered Stickman was missing so we wrote a description of him within a newspaper article to help find him!
To immerse us into the writing sequence we used our sense of touch to describe the mystery item which turned out to be a stick, before learning some new vocabulary. We read the story Stick Man and thought of ways we could help him get home. We were then introduced to newspapers and how these could help us find Stick Man and had a go at structuring and labelling a newspaper article.
During our skills lessons we learned all about adjectives and how they help us describe. We learnt some new ambitious adjectives and then had a go at using these in a sentence.

Martha Maps It Out
For our fourth writing sequence we were inspired by the text 'Martha Maps It Out.' We linked this to our own class trip when we walked around the village and completed a recount of the places we visited. We used our mini me's and small world to recreate our journey to support our oral rehearsal and for our skills we worked hard on our letter formation.

Spring Term
The Woods
To immerse us into our first writing sequence of the Spring term we read the story ‘The
Woods’ and first made predictions about what the mysterious creature
might be and then what it was going to do to the foxes. We also thought
about how the foxes might be feeling when they came face to face with the
creature and learned some new adjectives to help describe this.
During our skills lessons we practiced the use of capital letters before having a go at continuing the narrative, explaining what happened next.

Tidy
To immerse us into our second writing sequence, we read the story ‘Tidy’ and linked this to our closest woodland environment; Bestwood Country Park We thought about who lives in a woodland habitat and the things we can do to look after it. We even practiced by litter picking within school. We then thought about what instructions are and how they can help us and learned about the bossy words that are used within them.
During our skills lessons we practiced using finger spaces before writing our own set of instructions on how to care for the woodlands.
