Maths at Hawthorne
Our curriculum principles, REAL, are evident throughout the maths curriculum.
R -Rich Vocabulary
E – Experiential
A – Aspiration
L – Life Skills
Rich Vocabulary
The White Rose Maths Scheme, introduces a lot of subject specific vocabulary to the children. By using the vocabulary, children are able to construct and deepen their understanding. Teaching the vocabulary explicitly enables the children to make connections within their learning and encourages them to become more confident in Maths. This vocabulary is used within lessons and displayed on the working walls in the classroom for the teacher and/or children to refer back to. As children may not be exposed to this vocabulary in their normal day-to-day lives, we are enhancing the cultural capital of our children. To embed this further, we use Widget to make vocabulary accessible through the use of dual coding.
Experiential
Within our Maths lessons, all children from Nursery to Year 6 will engage with a variety of scaffolds and Maths manipulatives. With carefully planned lessons, the manipulatives and resources can replicate real life experiences eg. using money out in the real world. Making those connections is vital for when they leave school. The structure of the lesson sequences give the children the experience to learn with a range of approaches and resources readily available to them.
Aspiration
The White Rose Maths Scheme lends itself to develop a mastery curriculum for the children and we aim the encourage high aspirations by introducing the children to answer deeper learning challenges throughout their learning within the classroom. We expect the children to challenge themselves and hold high aspirations for any work they complete. The children have the chance to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills throughout their lessons; no only at at the end. No child is capped by their ability.
Life Skills
Through the well-planned Long-Term Plan and Subject Maps, children are provided with the Maths skills needed to progress to the next step in their education.
Timestables
At Hawthorne Primary School, our aim is to enable the children to become fluent and accurate Mathematicians.
We have introduced allocated time in our class schedules to explicitly teach multiplication and division facts so that they have quick recall.
Multiplication and division skills are vital in later life and underpin the majority of the Maths we teach.
We encourage and recommend that the children practice their timestable facts at home by using "Hit the Button" or logging into "Timestable Rock Stars".
